Sommaire en anglais
The purpose of this work is to review the existing recommendations, standards, laws and regulations on pig welfare during transport and to compare them with current scientific literature. We have focused on journey duration (including rest periods and supply of food and water) as a key issue during pig transport. Discussion on issues such as non-ambulatory animals or other animals not suited for transport (particularly early-weaned animals), pre-transport management, temperature and ventilation, and time in lairage issues are also included. We limit our comparison to Canada, the United States, the European Union (EU) (including the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland), South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
