There were 300 poultry breeders operating in Canada in 1946. Today in Canada commercial poultry is generally sourced from only two international poultry breeders. As commercial avian genetics have become narrower over the past 60 years, genetic variations have been lost. According to Rare Breeds Canada, a national conservation organization, 37 poultry breeds are at risk of extinction in Canada.
