Sommaire en anglais
One of the most important decisions a strawberry grower must make is selecting which varieties to plant. The grower must take into account the microclimate of the farm site, including such factors as length of growing season, average heat accumulation, and risk of frost during bloom. The physical properties of the soil, the prevalence of soil-borne pathogens, and the availability of water for irrigation may also affect variety selection. The winter hardiness of a variety is important to consider for growers in the colder areas of Atlantic Canada. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the method of marketing must be considered. Will the berries be harvested by the consumer (pick-your-own) or will they be harvested and shipped to nearby or distant retail markets ?
