Quantification of disease severity is essential in estimating crop damage. Assessment keys illustrating progressive increases in disease severity support accurate visual estimation of severity for specific diseases (James, 1971). An assessment key has been developed for rapid quantification of rib discoloration severity in the field. Rib discoloration symptoms are small, brown streaks along the midribs of leaves located below the cap leaves of crisphead lettuce. The symptoms develop as the plants mature and the heads become firmer. This physiological disorder was associated with high temperature stress (Jenni, 2005).
