The interest deferral began in May 2006, when the Federal government announced that the collection of CAIS overpayments and interest on overpayments would be waived until January 1, 2007. This was done in combination with the announcement of the CAIS Inventory Transition Initiative (CITI). Instead of charging overpayments on CAIS, CITI payments were reduced by any amounts still owed after the recalculations.
