In 2009, the total number of milk cows increased slightly to 981,000 animals. With the number of dairy farms continuing it's decline, the average number of cows per farm continues to increase. The Canadian artificial insemination industry sampled 683 new young bulls in 2009, including young sires tested outside Canada. The number of cows enrolled on milk recording programs increased in 2009. The production per cow (all breeds, based on 305 day lactation) enrolled on official milk recording averaged 9,592 kg of milk, 362 kg of butterfat and 307 kg of protein.
