Summary in English
Rutabagas are commonly known as Table Turnips or Swedes. They are a valuable winter vegetable and are grown in various parts of Canada. Under favorable conditions, an acre of rutabagas will yield approximately 400 to 500 bushels (22 to 28 t/ha). The cost of production varies greatly depending on labor costs, degree of mechanization, size and efficiency of farming operation and suitability of growing conditions. There is a good, steady demand for high-quality turnips for both the domestic and foreign markets.
The most popular of turnips is Laurentian. It is a globe-type, purple-topped, yellow-fleshed rutabaga. Other acceptable varieties are Golden Table, Victory Neckless and Alta Sweet.
To produce top-quality turnips the grower must control all phases of production. Failure to do so is to invite a heavy loss of income.
