Summary in English
Agro climatic indices (heat units, seasonal water deficits and aridity index) were determined
for the main agricultural regions of Ontario and Quebec for an observed baseline climate (1961-1990) and for three future time periods (2010-2039, 2040-2069, 2070-2099). Results indicate a substantial increase in heat units and growing season length available for corn, soybeans, spring seeded cereal crops and forages for the future time periods. These increases indicate that expansion of corn and soybean production into areas that are presently unsuitable due to lack of heat units and short growing seasons may be possible. There is also potential for increased yields. Patterns of seasonal water deficits remain very similar for present and future time periods. Greatest deficits are indicated in an area of eastern Ontario and in a region northwest of Kapuskasing.
