Production of hogs and pork in Canada has grown impressively over the last two decades. In the early 1970s, Canada was roughly self-sufficient in pork with small exports in some years balanced by small imports in others. Net exports grew rapidly from 1978 to 1984, after which time they have remained high but relatively stagnant. Although many Canadian hog producers have invested heavily in modernizing and enlarging their operations, others have abandoned theirs and total hog output in Canada has not changed much over the past ten years. The Canadian hog-pork sector faces many challenges at the present time.
