BEGINNINGS

The library of Agriculture Canada is old and prestigious. In 1867 it came ready-made into Confederation by combining agricultural literature from what are now the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. J.E. Lemieux, Office-keeper, was in charge.

Collection development and expansion of services were not to begin, however, until 1910 when the first librarian was appointed. The institution flourished and outgrew four locations during the next 20 years. Part of this time it was known as the library of the International Institute of Agriculture Branch.
